What makes protocol engineering successful?

Internet protocols are created in response to new needs and updated requirements. This talk will address the evolution of protocols, and why it is important for them to be reactive, not prescribed -- which makes roadmapping impossible. Examples of some historical challenges, which are current hot topics at the IETF, will be discussed.
