geant Network monitoring supporting the arts: a transatlantic dance performance use case for perfSONAR MDM

The crucial role of the multi-domain network monitoring at an intercontinental level was demonstrated at the TERENA Network Performing Arts Production Workshop in Barcelona (June 2011). The event included a successful simultaneous performance featuring dancers in Brasilia and Barcelona performing together in choreographed unison. Video cameras in each venue captured the dancers, with the images and sound then transmitted across high speed academic networks and back projected in real time at the other location. Making sure the performance was successful required fast, high capacity and stable network links between the two venues. As part of the collaboration the networks involved used perfSONAR MDM to test the route, monitor for potential problems and solve any issues before the performance began.
