EGI Cloud Infrastructure Platform

Based on a rich history of managing and operating large-scale Distributed Computing Infrastructures, EGI is extending its support for research communities in Europe and worldwide by incorporating distributed infrastructure Cloud services delivered by its federated National Grid Initiatives and their associated Resource Centres. Taking its first steps in mid-2011, the EGI Federated Clouds Task Force has successfully demonstrated the integration of key components into a federated Clouds Infrastructure that together satisfy key capabilities required by research communities to integrate and utilise Cloud Computing into personalised research environments for individual scientists when and where they need it. The EGI Federated Clouds Task Force brings together key stakeholders from the EGI ecosystem: Resource Centres, Technology Providers and Research Communities together develop a blueprint for resource providers and user communities describing how to engage with EGI's cloud activities backed by a continuously improved test-bed used to validate common use cases and requirements against available technology and standards. Starting with dedicated services targeting the key capabilities for an infrastructure Cloud federation, the EGI Federated Clouds Task Force is maturing the needed services and technologies towards being delivered by existing EGI infrastructure services, and into federated Cloud services offered by local Resource Providers across EGI. These integrated services are coordinated into EGI's Cloud Infrastructure Platform, which will allow Platform Integrators, Software providers and Research Communities to share data, information and expertise as and where needed.
