Stereoscopic picture transmissions for remote collaboration

Stereoscopic and immersive visualisations are used in various scientific and engineering fields, such as chemistry, architecture or machinery design. In this presentation we describe our practical experience with long-distance transmissions of such visualisations for remote collaboration of distributed teams. Particularly, we did experiments with transmission from the CAVE (CAVE Automatic Virtual Environment) in the Institute of Intermedia in the Czech Technical University in Prague to the 3D projection at the UCSD (University of California in San Diego) over a distance of more than 10000 km. We used a high-speed network to transmit uncompressed 3D visualisation, which enabled remote interactive and collaborative navigation through stereoscopic models.
